Palette & Purpose is an independent design education notebook for small business owners, cafes and restaurants. The site brings together practical articles, original visual studies and worksheets that help you prepare a brief, compare layouts and check a finished design.
What you will find here
Our guides focus on the decisions behind a visual identity: how a logo survives a small crop, how a color becomes readable text, how a menu explains a choice and how a reservation message tells a guest what happens next. The design library collects visual references; the related guides explain how to adapt them.
Start with the logo checklist, the color planning guide or the menu and reservation worksheets. Each is intended as a useful starting point for your own work, rather than a finished identity for every business.
How to read our examples
Fictional restaurant names, mock layouts and before-and-after exercises are educational concepts. They do not describe commissioned client work, actual restaurant results or measured increases in bookings or sales. A visual comparison illustrates a design decision; it does not establish a business outcome.
Named brand analyses are independent commentary. Brand names and marks belong to their respective owners; their inclusion does not imply a partnership or endorsement. We link to primary sources when explaining a brand’s published history or guidance.
Editorial checks
We aim to give each guide an actionable task, an example and a way to check the result. Technical claims such as platform dimensions, font permissions and contrast criteria should be checked against the primary sources linked in the relevant guide. Platform specifications and licenses can change, so confirm the applicable source before production.
Color associations are context dependent. Palette suggestions are design exercises, and screen previews cannot guarantee a printed result. Print a proof on the intended stock and test digital layouts at the size your customers will see.
